Premiere League 29th Aug 21
Bridge Utd 1 – 6 Ennis Town
Ennis Town got their first 3 points of the new season with possibly the surprise result of the weekend, although not to the players and management. This young squad were disappointed with their showing last week and felt they could play a lot better and so they did. They were on the front foot from the beginning of the game and were the more livelier though it took an own goal on 10 minutes to open the scoring, when an over hit back pass deceived John Mulready in the Bridge goal. There was no confusion about their second. In the 15th minute Davey Keenan picked up the ball just inside the Bridge half. Space opened up for him and he took advantage to race at the defence before unleashing a low hard shot from 25 yards into the bottom corner. Davey though he had his second shortly after when he chipped the keeper but it was ruled out for offside. Keenan wasn’t to be denied his second though on 25 minutes. Dean Hegarty’s quick corner found Lee Clohessy on the edge of the square. His pin point cross found the head of Keenan and he directed it beautifully passed the outstretched arms of Mulready. Bridge came into the game more in the 2nd quarter but Ennis Town defence stood firm. Andrew Skerritt was commanding in the Town goal dealing with any crosses decisively. 3 nil at half time to the Ennis lads.
The Ennis lads expected an onslaught from Bridge Utd in the early stages of the second half but the defence remained rock solid confining Bridge to Corners and the odd long range effort. It was Ennis Town who were creating the clearer chances and in quick succession Davey Keenan and Lee Clohessy saw guild edge chances go abegging. In the 70th minute Dean Hegarty scored from the penalty spot after a foul on Lee Clohessy. On 75 minutes Davey Keenan added Towns 5th and his 3rd when he chased down and blocked John Mulready’s clearance which saw the ball rebound into the empty Bridge net. Late on Glen Murray got a goal back for Bridge after a fine move but within a minute Ennis Town had their 6th when Robbie Gormley struck a fine shot to the net after another fine move.
This was a fine team performance from the Ennis lads from the first 11 to the subs that came on. They all played their part in this win. The Keeper and Defence was solid throughout. The midfield closed down and moved the ball quickly while they were threatening all day in attack.
Joint man of the match Davey Keenan and Sean Perrill in defence.
